Mr. Mikes RDP Athlete of the Week for February 13, 2023

After another outstanding performance from the fifth-year setter, Maddux Greves is named the Kings Athlete of the Week. To cap off his final year in the ACAC, Greves put up 24 assists against the NAIT Ooks, whom he faced last year in the ACAC Championship final, and 28 helpers against the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves. The Calgary native played in the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre for the last time in his career on Saturday afternoon against the Wolves. Before the match, the Kings held a ceremony for the setter as he capped off an incredible career that stretched between two different conferences. Before coming to Red Deer, he played for the Trinity Western University Spartans, who compete in USports, and the SAIT Trojans.

As he has done all year round, he led an effective offense that had 35 kills on Friday night and 38 on Saturday afternoon. The Business Administration student also had 13 total digs throughout the weekend.

Head Coach Aaron Schulha explains Greves will definitely be missed on the court in Red Deer and in the Kings locker room.

“His leadership and volleyball IQ are outstanding, not to mention his setting quality. He is one of the top setters in all of Canada. He has been a great ambassador for the program and we look forward to seeing what is next for him. Hopefully, it is after a championship or two with us. Maddux has a great volleyball mind and he is a pretty bright kid.”

Greves and the Kings will have the weekend off to prepare for the championships hosted by Keyano College on February 23-25. They too will look to defend their title from last year as they head to Fort McMurray as the number one seed in the South Division.

Regardless of the results this weekend, setter Maddux Greves put his best effort forward and is named the Kings Athlete of the Week. Averaging 9.54 assists-per-set, which places him in second place in the ACAC, Greves helped his team to a three-set victory over the Olds College Broncos with 25 assists on the night. He was awarded the player of the match for leading an effective offense and guiding his hitters to kills. On the defensive side of things, he also had eight digs.

But in a five-set thriller, Greves put forward a season-best 50 assists on the night to give him 1600-plus assists in his career split between the ACAC and USports. He also brought back his record-winning topspin serve on Saturday night and had six aces against the Broncos. Just under a year ago, he broke the ACAC record for most aces in a match with 14.

This weekend, Head Coach Aaron Schulha will be recognizing and congratulating Maddux on an incredible career as a setter in the ACAC as he is playing in his final year of eligibility. He spent a couple of years with the Trinity Western University Spartans before coming over to the ACAC, where he played for the SAIT Trojans before coming over to Red Deer.  The ceremony will follow their match against the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves on Saturday afternoon which starts at 3 pm.
