The Queens explode for six goals in Calgary against the Trojans
Calgary, January 14, 2023 – In a rematch of last night's game between the SAIT Trojans and the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens, it was a very slow start as the game was delayed by almost an hour due to having no referees at the start of the game. They were told to sit around and wait. Finally, after an hour, they were able to get back on the ice and warm up with the referees skating onto the ice just after the anthem was finished.
The Queens would open up the scoring early with a goal by forward Jailyn Bablitz which was her third goal on the year. She was left open in the slot and wristed it past the Trojans goaltender. Red Deer would extend their lead to two late in the first period after forward Avery Lajeunnesse got a partial breakaway on the Trojans and backhanded it into the pack of the net. Due to a time shortage, they were not able to flood the ice in between periods and the teams just got a small break before they started the second.
Near the halfway point the Queens would extend their lead to three as forward Natalie Buttle (Bachelor of Kinesiology) got on the scoring sheet as she was stopped on her first try but not her second.
Seconds later, Red Deer added yet another to their total to make it 4-0. On a two-on-one Buttle would find her teammate Kassy Gaudette (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) across the ice who would flick it over the Trojans goaltender. At the end of the second, the Queens were madly outshooting their opponent 30-6.
On their 38th shot of the game, the Queens made it 5-0 with a tip-in goal from forward Haley Kicia (Bachelor of Arts in Sociology) after the puck was shot in from the point by defense Alesha Santos (Bachelor of Science in Nursing).
The goals continued to rain for Red Deer as this time defense Kaedence Mollin (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) walked in from the blue line and fired a shot at the top of the faceoff circle to the right of the Trojans goaltender.
The final score was 6-0 for the Queens as their goaltender Izzy Palumbo put forth a 12-save shutout. With a two-point night Natalie Buttle received the honor of player of the game for her Queens.
Red Deer will be back in action next Friday against the NAIT Ooks in Edmonton with a 7 pm puck drop. Their next home game will not be until Saturday, January 28 when they take on the Olds College Broncos on Bell Lets Talk Night.
