The Queens tame the Lions in Calgary

Calgary, January 20, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team has turned things around after winning their last three games. They started their season with three straight losses.

The Lions jumped out to a very early lead but that didn't stop the Queens from battling back to tie it late in the first and take the lead. RDP has shown their adversity all year long and they weren't just going to give up as Head Coach Avery Harrison said last week, they are taking it one quarter at a time. At the end of the quarter, the Queens were down by four points heading into the second with the Lions leading 21-17.

The Queens found the lead back with an incredible 14-6 run halfway through the second quarter and continued to run away with it right before the half. But with a late surge by the Lions, the Queens just had a 37-35 lead heading into the halftime break. Guard Sophie Melin (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) continued her impressive three-point shooting from last week as she went two for four and led her team with 14 points going into the third quarter.

After falling behind by a few points early on, the Queens battled back once again late in the third quarter to take a slight 53-50 lead into the final quarter, which saw the visiting team extend their lead to eleven with just two-and-a-half minutes to go. RDP would win their fourth game in a row with a 75-61 victory over the Lions in Calgary.

These two teams will face off tomorrow in Red Deer at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in a rematch starting at 6 pm. The Make Some Noise for Mental Health event will continue tomorrow evening. Guard Sophie Melin was named the player of the game for the second game in a row as she finished with 21 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
