The Kings drop a set against the Lions, win it in four

Calgary, January 21, 2022 – Words can not describe what is happening with the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball program as after an early season loss to the Briercrest College Clippers, they have won 10 straight matches and sit comfortably in first place with 22 points.

Like last night, the Kings were very slow to come out of the gate and played alongside the Lions for most of the opening set, making it quite the battle to open up the match. Red Deer managed to pull away with a 25-23 set victory in a game that could have gone either way. On set point, a float serve by the Kings caused the pass by the Lions to be off the net which made it difficult for the home team to set up for a kill. In the end, they could not return the third contact over the net which gave the Kings the 25th point and the win.

Early on in the second set, the Lions were leading the Kings, which goes to show the composure of this Calgary team as they are able to shake off the past set and match. Ambrose was able to put the Kings on their heels going into their final timeout as the Kings would have to shake off a few set points to come back and tie it. But the home team did not allow that to happen as their setter was able to win a net battle and put the ball to the court for the 25-23 second set victory to tie it up at one.

After yet another close set that saw the team's neck-and-neck for most of the set, the Kings managed to pull ahead late in the third to come away with a 25-20 victory. After a pass that went straight over the net off the serve, Outside-hitter Nicholas Possingham (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) paid them back with a kill to take the third set.

But the third set featured a much different Kings squad as they exploded to a 7-1 lead early in the fourth set and did not look back. RDP found their groove and finished off the fourth set with a blowout 25-14 victory after the Lions blew their kill out of bounds.

The Kings player of the game went to outside-hitter Noah Carlson (Open Studies), who has now won two of these honours in his first four games repping the Kings jersey.

The Kings will be back in Calgary next Friday when they take on the SAIT Trojans at 8 pm. They will be back at home a week from today for a rematch against the Trojans.
