The Kings find their winning ways in Camrose

Camrose, November 4 - The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings would travel to Camrose to take on the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings. The Kings are coming off a four game losing skid and entered this game looking for their first win of the season.

It was a fast, energetic first quarter between the Vikings and the Kings. Nearing the end of the quarter, Kings forward Kevin Szymanek (Business Administration General Management) made an impressive bank shot three pointer to take the lead in the quarter. The Kings would have a small 22-19 lead going into the second quarter. It was very much a team-effort for the Red Deer squad with eight players getting on the scoresheet. The Vikings were led by Lethbridge-native Ryan Degner who had nine points and three rebounds.

Eduardo Crespo (Academic Upgrading) from the Kings picked up a three-point of his own off the backboard to open the second quarter scoring. This would lead to a hard-fought second quarter with the Vikings battling back to tie the game at 37 before half-time. Kings Post Jose Mauro would squeak away with a team leading nine points at the end of the second quarter. Degner continued to lead his team with 12 points.

The Kings pushed for the lead in the third quarter with an aggressive start to their offense in the opening couple minutes of the second half. But that didn't stop the Vikings from staying in this game with a great offensive effort of their own. The visiting Kings would have the slight edge going into the final quarter with a 56-52 lead. Mauro continued to lead the Kings throughout the 30 minutes of the game with 11 points and two rebounds. However, Crespo was right behind him finishing with 10 of his own. Degner stretched his team lead to 17 points.

The Kings would find their winning form after a very scrappy yet offensive fourth quarter that saw them put up 27 points enroute to an 83-72 victory. The Vikings still managed to put up 20 points but it just was not enough.

It was both team's leading scorer's of the night that were named player of the game. Jose Mauro finished his night with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Ryan Degner completed his impressive night with 17 buckets and four rebounds.

The Kings will have a game next week on Remembrance Day against The Kings University Eagles in Edmonton at 8 pm.
