Boston Pizza RDP Athlete of the Week for January 20, 2025

As the 2024/2025 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Curling season has progressed, Joel White has elevated his game for the Red Deer Polytechnic Mixed Curling team. Since the ACAC Fall Regional, White has demonstrated increased confidence and ability in his shot making and strategy.

At the Winter Regional, White, the RDP Mixed Curling team’s third, made many great shots, which included impressively curling over 80 per cent during two games. Red Deer’s White played an integral role in the Polytechnic’s Mixed Curling team earning a 2-2 record in Edmonton (and 5-3 overall), helping his group advance to the ACAC Curling Championships hosted by RDP at the Pidherney Centre from February 7-9, 2025.

In the ACAC Mixed Curling Division, White, a Business Diploma student, and the RDP team will compete against the SAIT Trojans, Lakeland College Rustlers and the Concordia University Thunder for gold.

Congratulations!

The Gutter RDP Athlete of the Week for November 27, 2023

Lead Joel White had quite an impressive debut at the 2023 ACAC Fall Regional in Lloydminster, SK this past weekend. White and the Kings were able to finish their first bonspiel of the season with a 4-1 record and go into the 2024 Winter Regional in first place in the men’s division. One of their four wins came against the Concordia University Thunder, who are the reigning ACAC Champions, with the Polytechnic coming out on top with a 6-3 victory on the final day of the bonspiel.

Whites draw to the button sat 26cm away which was the fourth-best in the men’s division. This is quite impressive with the lead not typically drawing to the button but rather setting up the end with guards which is what he did very well for the Kings. Head Coach Brad Hamilton said the first-year lead made it difficult on his opponent in every end this past weekend with his shot-making abilities.

“Lead Joel White was able to set up ends that had the other teams in trouble right off the bat in each end. Joel played like a veteran in his first ACAC event and was part of a powerhouse sweeping duo that influenced the outcome of some important shots.”

White and the Kings will now await to defend their top spot in the division at the Winter Regional which will be held from January 19-21 at the Avonair Curling Club in Edmonton.

Congratulations Joel on an incredible first appearance at an ACAC event!
